English Language: Our Second Prime Concern After Arabic

    by Abdurrahim ACN

The world in which we are all living today is rapidly moving into some sort of 'Global Village'. Global village, a famous phrase coined by Marshall McLuhan, a Canadian Media and Politics scholar, brings us the true facts of what we see today in International life. We can no longer find in this village of mankind, a limit that makes nations or states far apart. The concrete demarcation borders among nations in former times are now becoming more and more abstract as the result of vast development in telecommunication and the flows of information. The world is realised to be one single community in which all people can be easily reached without barriers of long distances.

All men regardless to their nationalities are united in one 'small' global village. Unfortunately, however, this state of mankind's unity is not materialised by the Power of Islam, our true religion which should have controlled the world to offer salvation to all men and spread Allah (SWT)'s Blessing and Bounty on earth. Instead, these rapid changes in today's world: the advent of sophisticated automation, new inventions and discoveries in science and technology, cultural invasions and information wars, etc. are brought to us by the West.

The history has shown us that the key to all life-enriching minarets of science and knowledge used to be in the hand of Islamic Ummah in the period of started from Andalusia (now Spain) conquest by the Arab forces led by Tariq-ibn-Ziyad in the year of 711. The great achievement of Islam and Arab has introduced civilisation to the West (Europe). The West used to acquire knowledges but studying the Arab/Muslim civilisation and therefore it is the Arabic language that they had learn and master.

Now we find the 'key' is in the hand of Western powers who mainly use English language. Then what must we do now? Surely, as Muslims, we all have the same duties as to bring back those achievement as they were in earlier time of the Glory of Islam. We should do the same things as the European people used to do to gain knowledges from Andalusia (so called 'The Lost Paradise') by mastering Arabic language. It is the English language that today we have to master to gain and spread knowledges, especially in the matter of true and pure picture of Islam that we have to show to the much-biased western society.

We are now as Muslims students who are thirsty of knowledges either of Islamic or general knowledges, as potential Muslim intellectuals and scholars that we will become of in the future: We have two prime concerns on foreign language proficiency. The first to master Arabic, because it is the language of Islamic world and knowledges. The second is to master English, because one famous saying may remind us that: "English is the key to open the door of the world". Finally, as we know that ignorance is our greatest enemy and the wise man should learn to know his enemies by acquiring knowledges which one of them can be done through English language mastery. The Advice of our Prophet Mohammed (SAW) is true: "Whoever learns the language of a tribe, will be safe from (their) tricks.

At least but not least, "IPTEK = IMTAQ (Ilmu Pengetahuan dan Teknologi = Iman dan Taqwa / Science and Technology = Faith and Obedience to Allah SWT) must go together in balance like what our Father of Technology and Progress, Prof. Dr. BJ Habibie said.
